Margaret + Noah’s Virginia Eastern Shore Wedding
Margaret has impeccable taste, and she’s kind and organized. So it was no surprise that her wedding had beautiful details, from feathers in the bouquets to bright suspenders on the kids, or that the guests laughed and danced non-stop all night.
The bride is the manager of Panorama Events, where I was married, and I was so happy to be asked to photograph her wedding. I was pretty intensely pregnant at the time, so Amy Sandoval covered the second half of the wedding. She was great to work with!

CASA Midwifery Students Intercultural Midwifery Exchange
After their presentations at the Universidad Intercultural Maya, the midwifery students went to study in Mayan villages. Ema, Angie, Carmen Susana, Abi, Lupita and Elisa stayed with traditional midwife Doña Elsa in the small town of Chunhuhub. These students range in age from 17 to 36, and come from varied backgrounds: a performance artist, a small-town high school graduate, a nurse, an artisan who spent years traveling through Latin America.
Doña Elsa practices several kinds of alternative medicine, including herbal baths, ceremonies, chiropractic adjustments, and emotional and spiritual counseling, as well as referring patients to the local health center at times. The students stayed in her medical facility, watching her attend patients with fevers, depression and high blood pressure. Meanwhile, they offered prenatal visits at the health center, gave talks on contraception, and showed traditional midwives how to use analog thermometers, plastic umbilical cord clamps, and other equipment in a kit provided by the school.
Next post: traditional Mayan abdominal massage.
Night Children Getting Down
This Saturday I put on some eye liner and photographed a Spank Rock, LMFAO and Ke$ha show at Jones Beach.
Clutches of middle school girls wore homemade, sparkly shirts and shouted with excitement. Shorts were universally short, and boys in tight pants drank sweet drinks hiding vodka*. Performers sang sexy songs about parties and sex, someone took a shot onstage through a beer bong, and my sister and I laughed and danced because that’s what you do when you’re surrounded by glitter and neon and nearly grown-up children’s excitement. An opening act relaxed drinking beer on their tour bus, joking about shows and each other, and employees enforced rules. Couples wrapped themselves in each other and made out intensely, ignoring streams of girls stalking by in heels and ripped fishnets. Ke$ha shouted “I fucking love you guys – now everyone go get laid!” and later, dads crossed their arms and waited by SUVs for their children to emerge and climb inside, shouting and singing through crowded parking lots.
*Allegedly – but I was a teenager once. So I think I know.
Work With Me Here, Picture
This one doesn’t fit in my edit, but I like it. So I’m putting in its own post, because this is my blog, and I make the rules.

Abel Longboarding
I went to St. John, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where I spent a day with Abel.
Abel is a 16 year-old who lives in a jungle roost with limited indoor plumbing (standing under lush trees, listening to jungle bugs and singing frogs while I showered under a bucket of cold water, was refreshing and beautiful) while his mom lives on her sailboat. We hitchhiked, found shelter from thick raindrops under trees, walked up giant hills and drank the most rewarding smoothies of our lives.
