In January of 2012, students from Mexico’s only government-accredited midwifery training program traveled to villages in the state of Quintana Roo to study with Mayan traditional midwives. There the students from the CASA Midwifery School studied indigenous midwifery practices including uterine massage while educating traditional midwives about handling birth emergencies.
This cultural exchange integrated best practices from indigenous healthcare rooted in traditional, isolated, impoverished regions with professionalized, evidence-based maternity care, and is part of a trend toward embracing midwifery in Mexico.
